“Knowing the future is promised to nobody, we are embracing our life today.” These were the words written three years ago by Leslie Nelson, wife of full-time RVing friend Troy Nelson of Free2RV. Little did she know at the time how those words would ring so true. We were shocked and heartbroken to learn that Troy – in his 40s – passed away on Monday, unexpectedly and suddenly, after a heart attack…his funeral is today.
We met the Nelsons at Thousand Trails Palm Springs 3 years ago… they were childhood sweethearts, had been married 29 years at the time, and were a great, down to earth couple. They took us Jeeping in Joshua Tree National Park, we enjoyed happy hour, played pool, went to lunch, visited their RV and gawked at their fun toys. We were inspired by them and shared their story of hitting the road full-time in their RV at such a young age on our blog, where Leslie wrote about what inspired them to sell their home in Austin, TX and hit the road full time in their RV.
“During our travels we met many couples that were either part timers or full timers and were often “mature” in years. They would share their only regret was not getting on the road sooner – telling us to do it now. We took the advice to heart, deciding not to wait for the perfect time… but instead, make our time perfect. Knowing the future is promised to nobody, we are embracing our life today. “
You can read Troy and Leslie’s story here... we are so sad to lose Troy, and so glad they got to live their lives to the full, exploring the country in their RV, at least for a few years… some don’t ever get that chance. We hope their story inspires you too, and that you take a moment to reflect and think of Leslie, Troy and their families at this time… and what it would mean to fully embrace your own life…. now…?
We’re about to go Jeeping in Sedona in your honor Troy, and to remember that great day we had with you and Leslie in Joshua Tree National Park. You were the strong, silent type… but you truly made an impact on us… and you will be missed…
Your friends, Julie and Marc
