Open Air Resorts Spicewood Texas RV Resort

Check out this brand new RV Resort in Spicewood Texas. The Texas hill country west of Austin is really getting popular for weekend getaways. Wineries, craft breweries, lake activities along the Colorado River, and the scenic rolling hills are some of the best that Texas has to offer.

We have traveled to, and stayed in this area many times in our 6 years of full time RV Travel, and were excited to check out this brand new RV resort.

Disclaimer: Our two day stay at this resort was comped by Open Air Resorts as part of a book signing event we were attending. It was a great event with live music, wine and beer tastings, and great connections with people.

Location of Open Air Resorts Spicewood

Spicewood Texas is about 45 minutes west of Austin in the beautiful hill country. World class wineries, hiking, golfing and lake activities are some of the key draws to the area. Open Air Resorts newest RV park and tiny home resort is open year round.  We visited in their slowest time of year, winter. But the RV park was still full of energy and mostly full of guests.

Open Air Resorts Spicewood also offers the opportunity to stay in renovated vintage Airstreams and other classic trailers like a 43’ Spartan. There are beautiful tiny homes for rent as well.

The surrounding area is mostly undeveloped rolling hills, and nice residential areas, including golf courses. The nearby town of Spicewood is relatively small with limited services. Small local grocery stores are about 15 minutes away, but the much more substantial town of Marble Falls is about 25 minutes away.

Area Attractions

This area is known for world class wineries, hiking and lake activities.  Hill country has some of the most scenic areas in Texas. We hear that it is especially beautiful in spring when the bluebonnets are in bloom. Golfing, wildlife refuges, craft breweries, horseback riding and more are available nearby.

Austin is about 45 minutes away if you want a cool big city vibe. Marble falls is about 25 minutes away and has some beautiful waterfalls and water front areas.

Boat access to Lake Travis is only 5-7 miles away, but lake shore access is about 30 minutes away.

Amenities and Activities

Being a virtually brand new resort, the amenities are of course, all in amazing condition. The main office / clubhouse has a small store, and a very nice lounge area that has a glass wall that opens up in good weather.

Between the clubhouse and main shower/laundry building is a large courtyard. This is a great space for interacting with other guests, playing cornhole, and lounging next to the pool. There is a sand volleyball court, a pickleball court, and a covered ping pong table. For the younger kids, there is a very nice playground, and even a Ga Ga Ball area for the toddlers.

For water lovers, Open Air Resorts Spicewood has a beautiful, though not heated, pool. Great in the summer, but mostly just for looks in the winter. For those who like fishing, you don’t need to leave the property.  There is a stocked, catch and release, fishing pond on site. Boat access to the large Lake Travis and river is only 5-7 miles away.

Community

In our conversations with staff and other guests, it was evident that there is a very strong community here at the Spicewood Open Air Resorts. We found many Texas RV parks to have very welcoming communities for ‘Winter Texans’, but this park was especially friendly. During the winter months, about 70% of the guests stay for 4 months or more. Summer time is expected to be more shorter term guests.

For those who prefer a little less socialization, there are still quiet spots like the stocked fishing pond. Complete with chairs to enjoy the quiet of the fountain.

Practical Amenities at Open Air Resorts Spicewood

Open Air Resorts Spicewood is a very pet friendly resort and offers a dog park complete with dog washing station. They also offer free cable TV and WIFI. WIFI strength was very fast, but we mostly used our own internet connectivity via cellular.

We experienced 2 bars of 4G signal with AT&T and Verizon, and 1 bar of 4G with T-Mobile. Spicewood offers garbage pick up from your site, and has a propane filling station if needed. The laundry room was beautiful and huge for this size of resort. In fact, it is probably the nicest laundry room in all of our nearly 6 years of RV travel.

There are two shower / restroom buildings. The showers are all separate with their own locks, and are impeccably clean. Water pressure is between 80-100 psi, and the water heaters are huge, so you can take long hot showers.

This is actually one of very few RV resorts that we have ever used the public showers at. Partly because we were in a rental RV, not our normal RV. But mostly because the showers were just so great.

Mail / Packages

When we visited, they did allow packages for guests, but please always check to make sure before shipping something to any RV resort..

RV Sites at Open Air Resorts at Spicewood

Once at the resort and checked in, staff will likely escort you to your site.  All internal roads and sites are paved. There are a total of 124 sites.  Twenty-nine of the sites have 100amp power to set up a tiny home. But only 3 of those 29 sites currently have tiny homes on them. Most of those sites are currently being used by RVs using 50/30 amp power. All sites have full hookups, and most are back in. Ten of the sites are pull through.

Open Air Resorts Spicewood did a nice job of laying out the park to make it easy to navigate with large RVs, and did their best to keep as many of the original mature trees as possible. New trees they planted are placed well to avoid future maneuvering challenges. Most sites could accommodate large RVs, but there are a few tight ones. All sites are pretty level, but do have a slight angle. Few of the RVs in the park needed leveling blocks.

As mentioned above, water pressure at this resort is quite high at 80-100 psi. So, be sure to use a water pressure regulator when connected. Water pressure regulators are available in the resort store, or you could simply fill your tank and use your onboard pump if needed.

Rates at Open Air Resorts Spicewood

Open Air Resorts at Spicewood uses dynamic pricing based on availability and time of year. During our stay in early February, daily rates for RV sites were $55, weekly for $299 and monthly for $599. They also offer discounts for Good Sam, Seniors, and Military.

Tiny Homes

Rates for the vintage trailer rentals and tiny homes are of course higher than a simple site, and is best to call for pricing and availability. They currently have 4 vintage trailers and two tiny homes, but plan to add many more in the coming months/years.

Rental vintage trailers

In addition to RV sites and tiny homes, Open Air Resorts at Spicewood also offers a number of vintage trailers by Airstream and Spartan.

Getting to Open Air Resorts Spicewood

Being in Texas, the roads into the general area are big, wide, and relatively flat. But, being in hill country there are some hills and curves as you get closer. In our research we didn’t find any significant grades to be concerned about, and found all the roads pretty easy to navigate.

If you have a large RV, it is best to choose the more southeastern entrance off of TX Hwy 71 onto Paleface road, as there will be fewer curves and low trees. That route will only add a few miles compared to the more direct route if coming from the west.

Summary

Open Air Resorts Spicewood is a really nice, virtually brand new resort, and one of many planned by this organization. A very well designed resort with great amenities for a park of this size. There is a great community feel here and we would love to come visit this resort again in the future.
