Boyds Key West Campground, Key West FL Review

This spring we stayed at Boyd’s Key West Campground. One of the great things about traveling full time in an RV is that you can park your home in a destination like the Florida Keys. We have stayed at RV parks in the Florida Keys many times. Read on to learn more about this campground, and our experience.

Location of Boyds of Key West RV Resort

Boyds Key West Campground is, as you might imagine, located in Key West Florida. Locals will point out that it is technically a campground on Stock Island, which is right next to the island of Key West. The drive down to Key West from mainland on Hwy 1 is very scenic. Be aware that it may take longer than you think. There is only one road, and if there is a car accident, it can slow down traffic substantially. But the road is smooth, flat and scenic as it travels between the hundreds of islands of the Florida Keys.

Boyds Key West Campground is on Maloney Ave, which is a small residential street, so you don’t need to worry about fast moving traffic at the entrance. The entrance is well marked and easy to access. The area surrounding the RV park is a mix of commercial and residential, but predominantly residential.

There are a couple restaurants and small stores nearby. Most likely, if you are staying here, you will be visiting restaurants and stores in Key West, only a short bike ride or drive away. Key west is a well established area with grocery stores and most stores you might need. Key West is a major tourist destination and cruise ship port, so there is a large selection of restaurants, shops and other tourist attractions. The main tourist area of Key West is about 5 miles (15 minutes by car) from Boyds.

Area Attractions

Boyds Key West Campground is very close to Key West. Key West is a major tourist destination, and is therefore loaded with area attractions. There is a very lively bar and nightlife. Restaurants, gift shops, art galleries are abundant.

You will also find museums and beach areas. Bus tours, boat tours, and most any water sports or rental equipment for water sports are readily available. When staying here, we predominantly bike into downtown, since car parking is challenging. Bus transport, or scooters are popular too.

Each of the Florida keys have their own personality. So, if Key West isn’t your cup of tea, you could also drive north to visit other areas. But, if not primarily visiting the Key West area, you may prefer to stay in an RV park closer to the area of the Keys most interested in.

Amenities and Activities

Boyds Key West Campground offers a pool, game room, store, boat dock, boat ramp, and a small beach area. Storage and a dog walking area are also available. Though there is ocean access, including a small beach area, it is not good for swimming. It is better for boats including kayaks, and maybe some fishing. The RV park also offers a laundry room, pavillion that regularly shows movies, and four bathhouse/restroom buildings.

There is easy access to bus transportation into Key West. We saw rental bikes, scooters and golf carts available through outside vendors. Some even delivered the rentals to the campground. Boyds has a calendar full of events during peak months. The RV park is well maintained and the staff were very pleasant during our visit.

Mail / Packages

We were only at this location for a short time, but we did receive a package here. As always, check with the office before shipping anything.

WIFI / Cable

The resort does offer free wifi and cable. We use our own data with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, so we didn’t try their internet. Regretfully, we forgot to make note of the signal strength, but we did have signal on all three carriers.

RV Sites at Boyds Key West Campgound

Once inside Boyds Key West Campground, the roads are mostly paved. The roads are average width, and predominantly one way traffic to avoid having two RVs on the same road. RV Sites are predominantly natural surfaces and many have concrete patios. Some of the sites are actually ocean front, but most are not.

There is mature greenery that helps the sites feel less crowded than they are. That said, the sites definitely can be a little snug, and difficult to park. Though many of the sites will handle RVs over 40’, availability and maneuverability definitely favors smaller rigs. Surprisingly, tenting sites are pretty popular here. There are probably at least 30 tent only sites. There are around 150 RV sites.

RV sites are full hook-up with 30/50amp power. Though a bit squeezy, the RV park is well maintained. There is a welcome center and office at the front of the RV park with two check-in lanes. Once checked in, you will be escorted to your site, to help you get parked.

Rates at Boyds Key West Campground

Being such a high demand location, rates are not cheap. Peak season is January through March. We stayed here in March and the nightly rate was $135/night. Off season rates are a bit lower, but still on the spendy side. But remember, this is campground near Key West Florida. Many other private campgrounds throughout the keys will charge upwards of $100/night. We have been able to score reservations at Florida State Parks in the Keys, and paid substantially less. But reservations for the state parks are hard to get.

Monthly and seasonal rates are available at Boyds. We heard monthly rates were between $2,500-$3,000. It is important to note that monthly and seasonal rates must be paid in full, in advance. Perhaps even more important to note, that they are non-refundable if you leave before the end of your booking.

The rates seem high to us, since we spend most of our time in Thousand Trails campgrounds. Thanks to our membership, we pay no nightly fee. But, since we spend so little most of the year, it makes it easier to justify higher rates in prime locations we want to visit. Despite the high nightly rates, Boyds books up well in advance. But inevitably, people cancel reservations, so we have been able to get reservations with pretty short notice.

Summary of Boyds Key West Campground

This is a medium sized RV park near Key West Florida. Long established and primarily family owned and operated, it is a popular choice for visitors to the area. As expected, it is pretty tight, but the lush greenery helps make it feel less crowded than it is. Staying in your RV in this area is pretty expensive, because it is highly desirable location with limited RV sites.

About our stay

We have stayed at Boyds twice now, for a combined total of almost three weeks. All of our visits were in peak season (Jan-March). Weather is very nice as would be expected on a tropical island. Though it is a nice RV park and we have had nice stays, we will likely stay at a different RV park in future visits to the area.
