Thunderbird RV Resort, Monroe, WA TT Review

Thunderbird RV Resort is located near Monroe Washington. It is your typical campground with fire rings, picnic tables, and trees. For more detail about the specifics of this RV park, sites, and amenities – including pros and cons – read on.

Location of Thunderbird RV Resort

The nearest large city is Seattle, which is about 45 minutes away to the southwest. The roads into the area are very good. There is one short steep hill between Monroe and the Thunderbird campground, but so short you would not need any advance planning. Most of the drive into the Monroe area will be on highways.

There are grocery stores, hardware stores, restaurants and fuel stations about 15 minutes away in Monroe. We didn’t notice any trains, planes, or heavy traffic in the area. It is very peaceful. Elevation is less than 100 feet, and is right next to the Skykomish River.

Area Attractions

There are some cute little towns in the area, like Snohomish, filled with antique shops and restaurants. We imagine most people who come to this campground are either looking for a peaceful stay at the campground, or plan to visit some of the Seattle area attractions, as they are pretty accessible from this campground. Seattle is only 45 minutes away. From what we heard, some of the folks in the campground stay more than six months of the year here, commuting to Seattle for work.

Amenities

This campground has a beautiful pool area, but we didn’t get to enjoy the pool during our stay because it was cold and rainy. The pool area has three pools, a spa and beautiful patio with chairs, all surrounded by trees. There is also a family lodge, sport courts, two large picnic areas and even a stage. Thunderbird has a very nice mini-golf course and a large playground for kids. This would be a fantastic campground for families with kids as there is a lot to do in the campground with nice facilities.

There is also a boat ramp for accessing the Skykomish river, but when we were there, the water seemed low for anything other than kayaks. We imagine there are times that the water is much higher. There is a laundry building that also has showers. RV storage area is available on site if you need to leave your RV un-attended for extended periods, but not there are not many storage sites.

Mail / Packages

The campground does not appear to accept mail or packages for guests. If you want something shipped to the area, you would need to ship it to General Delivery in one of the nearby towns.

WIFI / Cable

We believe they have WIFI, but no cable service offered at this campground. We use our own data with Verizon and T-Mobile, so we didn’t try the campground WiFi. Verizon and T-Mobile both had 2-3 bars of LTE signal un-boosted so we were able work effectively with that.

RV Sites at Thunderbird RV Resort

Once you are past the ranger station with security gate, the Internal roads and sites are gravel or other natural surface. Some of the internal roads at Thunderbird are a bit hilly, but we walked the whole campground and most all of the sites appear reasonably level. We needed to use some leveling blocks at our site, which was in the hilly area, but the sites and roads along the river seemed very level. Nearly all campsites in the main campground are spacious and have trees, but there are fewer trees in the campsites near the river.

There were many large RVs in the campground, and the roads are wide. Certainly not all sites can accommodate 40+ foot RVs, but would guess that more than half of the sites would be fine, especially along the river. Some of the sites in the hilly section are large enough to hold a large RV, but might be awkward to get into the site with the change in grade from the steep hill into the level site perpendicular to the hill.

Though a smaller campground in number of sites at just under 100 sites, the campground is broken up into three sections which makes it feel especially spacious. Two sections are along the river, and the third and larger section is across the street. All sections have security gates that require codes. The main section across the street from the river sites, is where most all of the amenities are located, but it is an easy walk across from other sections.

All sites in the main area are full hook-up, but sites along the river are water and electric only. Honey wagon services are provided by an outside vendor and must be scheduled by guest directly with vendor, or break camp and use the dump station. All sites are 30amp electricity, and all are back-in only. There are 4 cabins and 2 yurts for those without RVs.

PROS

  • Very peaceful area and campground
  • Beautiful pool area and nice amenities
  • Spacious sites and friendly staff

CONS

  • Some of the park and sites are a bit hilly.
  • Not all sites are full hook-up

Summary

Thunderbird is a very nice campground in a great part of the country for summer time visits. Roads in the area are great quality. Some sites are a little tricky to get into because of the hills, but most are spacious and level. Campground is well maintained, has nice amenities, and a beautiful pool area. Great place for a relaxing stay.

Getting There

We visited here in early October 2017 for 3 days. We had a really nice time here, would have liked to stay longer and would definitely come back to visit, especially since we have friends and family who live in this area and are able to stay with no nightly fee because of our Thousand Trails membership. You can learn more about how this membership saves us thousands every year HERE.

  1. Fyi. There actually is a train that goes through Monroe and the train whistle can be heard from the park at night and the early morning.
