LAST UPDATED 4/6/2020: With COVID-19 throwing our lives and travel plans into chaos, it can be difficult for many RVers to get accurate, up to date information on the areas that may impact you. In this RV Resource Roundup FAQ for COVID-19, we pulled together a series of official news sources and useful links to news updates, campground closures, RV parks that are open and accepting displaced full time RVers, border closures and much more.
These should help point you in the right direction of finding the answers to some of your most frequently asked questions. And get the latest information, direct from the source (in many cases). Try checking these links first to find your own accurate answers, before asking random strangers in Facebook groups or getting misled, confused or upset by rumors. Check the source of all news updates before sharing to help keep the flow of accurate information. (Not easy when it’s constantly changing, but let’s try!)

What Should RV'ers Do Now?
Follow the latest instructions as issued federally or by the state or county where you are located. Some areas are closing non-essential businesses and some are imposing lockdowns. And some roads are even being closed at state borders. This situation is changing quickly and often, so check for local updates.
In this blog post, we shared several options for RVers looking for a safe way to shelter in place, for an extended period.
What Should RVers Do Now? How and where to shelter in place during the pandemic.
Read the article and see the other sections below for links and resources on campground closures, travel restrictions, and where to find a place to stay.
No. This is not the time for vacations or camping trips.
We are all advised to avoid discretionary travel for at least the next 15 days. Plan for 30 days. And it could be even longer. Keep an eye on news updates for the latest, as this situation continued to develop – rapidly! If you are a snowbird or on vacation, and have a home to go to, it is advisable to return home, if possible. However, if you are a full-time RVer, stay where you are (if possible) or get to a place where you can hunker down for a while.Keep reading for more links and suggestions for how and where you can do that.
Some RV parks and campgrounds are closed, but many remain open. Travel is being discouraged, stay at home orders are in place around the country, and park owners understandably want to protect themselves and their campers from being exposed to COVID-19.
With that in mind, this isn’t camping as usual. This is about finding a safe place to hunker down and stay still, for as long as is necessary.
While some parks will accept full time or extended travel RVers who don’t have anywhere else to go, there will be some new rules to follow, in order to stay and keep everyone safe. This may included a longer stay and even a quarantine.
Check the private campgrounds section below for more detail and links to find RV parks that are open.
You can find other suggestions in our article on where to shelter during the pandemic.
Government Parks & Facilities
At the moment, most national parks and monuments (not all) remain open, but with limited amenities.
See the National Park Services general statement on the NPS website here:
https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/public-health-update.htm
Some National Parks may have changes to park and facility operations. It is best to check with individual parks to find their policy updates, as these can change at any time:
https://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm
Go to the Active Alerts page to find the latest closures or change in operations in each state and park: https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/alerts.htm?s=
Just enter the State, Alert Type, and Select Park for the latest information.
Also, check specific national park websites and their social media channels (Facebook, Twitter are usually the best) for the most up to date information.
Daily updates on campground closures are also being added daily to these RV and camping pages:

Camping reservations for many state (and other) parks can be reserved through the Recreation.gov website: http://www.Recreation.gov
If a park is closing, and you have a reservation during that time, the park will contact you by email to cancel your reservation and issue a refund.
If you do not hear from them by email, your reservation remains intact, unless they contact you otherwise.
Here is the official notice from Recreation.gov:
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
Recreation.gov is committed to the health and safety of all recreational visitors and our staff. We are closely monitoring the situation and working with our participating agencies to respond to current conditions. We are also adapting to this situation as it quickly evolves. At this time, there are no changes to our refund policy or procedures. If you have a reservation at a location that has been closed by local management, you’ll receive an email with more information. There is no need for you to call the contact center. You can find FAQs, our reservation policy, and other updates below.
More FAQ about this and their cancellation policy can be found here: https://recreationonestopprod.service-now.com
Here is the website for National Forests:
On the right side of the screen, enter the state and forest/grassland you are looking for, to check the latest alerts.

BLM is temporarily suspending the collection of all entrance fees until further notice. Other fees (eg. camping, rentals) remain in effect.
Much BLM land still remains open to the public. In-person public access at some visitor centers and public rooms may be restricted.
Here is the official Bureau of Land Management (BLM) website: https://www.blm.gov
Here is the page about BLM camping, specifically:
https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/camping
To find out the latest in your area/state, trying googling BLM and your state (or specific area) for updates.
Or check this list from Campendium and select the state of interest to you, for the latest information.
Note: the BLM and dispersed camping areas in Quartzsite, Arizona remain open. However a sign was posted on March 30, 2020 advising many areas are at max capacity. (Our personal experience is there is still plenty of space, but we expect the town’s local resources may not be equipped to handle crowds now that it is off season, so they are discouraging more campers from arriving).
The Coronavirus FAQ page on the BLM website goes here: https://www.usda.gov/coronavirus
No. US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is closing all USACE-managed COE campgrounds to protect against the further spread of coronavirus.

If you have a reservation:
Individuals with paid camping reservations will be contacted by email and full refunds will automatically be processed by Recreation.gov with no cancellation fees. Individuals should not contact Recreation.gov to request a refund as that will lead to a cancellation fee being charged.
To get the latest news on each park, visit their website: https://www.usace.army.mil/Coronavirus

Private Camping & Overnight
There are over 20,000 RV parks and campgrounds across North America. And while some are closing, many remain open.
Your best bet (if possible) is to try and extend your stay where you are already. If that is not possible, find a privately owned campground that is staying open. It is a good idea to look for campgrounds that accommodate RVers year-round (annual residents) as they would be considered life-essential, thus less susceptible to being closed down.
During this time, campground policies are changing quickly. It is wise to call ahead before traveling to your destination. And consider booking a stay until end of April at least, and even the end of May.
Find RV parks and campgrounds at:
http://www.campendium.com – this now has a “Filter” feature to enable you to find open campgrounds by using the search box to locate a desired area. Then select the filter to “exclude temporarily closed locations.”
http://wherecanicampnow.com – find RV parks that are taking full time RVers NOW amidst the COVID-19 situation. Powered by CampgroundViews.com, they are actively vetting and adding parks.

http://www.campgroundviews.com
You can also join this Facebook Group for Displaced Nomads and RVers, to request help or find RV parks or private property where you can hunker down for a while (potentially until the end of May).
While many public campgrounds are closing – some private ones too – there are also many that are staying open.

The most recent development from Thousand Trails was shared on April 2, 2020 and can be found here:
Thousand Trails COVID-19 Update re sheltering in place and extending stays for members.
In a nutshell, as advised in the company Facebook announcement:
“Members already at a TT campground may stay in place beyond the limits allowed by their membership contracts , without additional/new fees or chargers, through April 30, 2020.”
“Members with the Trails Collection currently staying at a Trails Collection property may extend their stays by converting to a retail reservation and utilizing the 20% discount off the daily rate and 10% off the monthly rate.”
“If you wish to extend your stay, please call the on-site campground management staff as soon as possible to make your request so they can update your reservation. For prompt service, we recommend calling the on-site teams rather than calling Member Services at this time due to the already high call volume experienced by our Member Services team.”
Note that TT and Trails Collection (Encore) campgrounds have canceled activities and closed many amenities for public health reasons.
In Florida, the local county asked tourists to leave, affecting visitors at Sunshine Key RV Resort and Fiesta Key RV Resort. “The only exception is for long-term renters in vacation homes and R/V parks with contracts of 28 days or more, who are presently in the Keys,” they wrote. “They are to be allowed to remain until the conclusion of their contracts.”
You can read the notice here: https://www.monroecounty-fl.gov/1169/COVID-19-Coronavirus
Meanwhile, a mandate from the Governor of Pennsylvania caused TT PA parks to close, but they have since re-opened.
Here is the announcement: https://www.governor.pa.gov/newsroom/all-non-life-sustaining-businesses-in-pennsylvania-to-close-physical-locations-as-of-8-pm-today-to-slow-spread-of-covid-19

Here is the official Thousand Trails COVID-19 Status Update from their website:
Most KOA’s are open and operating. However, some have closed due to local government shutdowns. At the time of writing, there are six (6) KOA properties closed temporarily.

If you need to cancel a reservation, KOA has advised they are not charging the usual $10 cancellation fee at this time.

Policies will depend on each casino, so call or visit their website for updates. If the casino is still open for business, you may be allowed to park in the parking lot (space permitting), but if the casino is closed, most likely you will not.
Find Casinos that may accept RVers here: https://www.casinocamper.com
Some are still open to RVers for an overnight stay, however reports are that many locations are crowded with RVers are the moment. Especially at Walmart, where truckers often park overnight to rest. If possible, try to park your RV elsewhere (eg. a private campground) to allow room for the truckers who don’t have that option. They are transporting our medical, food and toilet paper supplies!

Can you stay overnight?
It depends on the store and location. So call ahead to the location you want to visit to get permission from the manager. And Remember to patronize their business!

You might also find a camping solution at one of these properties offered by Hipcamp:
If you are unable to extend your stay where you currently are, have been asked to leave, or had a reservation cancelled, try these options.
- Reach out to family and friends who may have land or a parking space where you can stay for a while in your RV and self isolate.
- Find RV parks that are taking full-time RVers now amidst the COVID-19 situation at: http://wherecanicampnow.com Powered by CampgroundViews.com, they are actively vetting and adding parks.
- Visit this page on RVillage for a list of RV parks that are OPEN to RVers at this time: https://blog.rvillage.com/rvillage-list-of-open-rv-parks
- Check for privately owned RV parks and campgrounds that ARE open, using sites like campendium.com (they have a filter feature) campgroundreviews.com and campgroundviews.com and the RVillage Open Parks page
- Join this Facebook Group for Displaced Nomads and RVers, to request help or find RV parks or private property where you can hunker down and be safe.
- Consider finding an Airbnb or Extended Stay hotel where you can hunker down for a month or two. Competitive rates are likely to be found as very few people are traveling right now.
Here is what you may expect (as a guide) from places that ARE still accepting RVers:
- Some parks are allowing an overnight stay if you are just passing through on your way home.
- Some parks require a minimum 30 day stay, to reduce transient visitors.
- As this situation is changing often, you should ALWAYS call ahead to confirm that a campground is open, and has a spot for you before arriving.
- To reduce exposure risk, many parks have changed their methods for checking in, to minimize in person contact.
- Some parks may have limited or reduced services and amenities. (eg. closed pools, clubhouse, activities etc)
- Some parks may require a 14 day quarantine upon arrival.
- Please understand that these measures are often a requirement by local or state governments. And it is in the best interests of YOU and everyone else, to comply with them.
Besides normal storage options, we recently discovered a website called https://www.neighbor.com/rv-storage that is similar to AirBNB in that individuals rent out their storage space. It might be less expensive than normal options.
RV Travel & Route Information
Some are and some are not.
Please see the separate sections above for more information government operated facilities (eg. national parks, state parks, national forest, BLM, COE parks etc)
And please also refer to the section above on privately owned campgrounds, to see links and updates.
You can also find campgrounds en route using the RVLIFE app and RV Trip Wizard.

You can plan your route and find gas stations (and campgrounds) along your route using RV Trip Wizard.
Check local DOT and Turnpike Commissions for your state(s) to the latest updates. While it is true that some rest areas (eg. PA) closed this week, many reopened in response to protests by truckers and shippers. Many rest stops remain open, some with limited facilities.
As this situation is changing regularly, check your local DOT websites for each state, to see the latest. Eg. at the time of publishing, Florida rest areas remain open. If at all possible, try to leave the rest areas for truckers to use, especially where overnight parking is allowed. And look for a private campground instead.
Some counties are starting to enact driving curfews (eg. Orange County, FL between 11pm – 5am) until further notice.
It is possible other counties and states may follow with a curfew.

If you are looking for options to work remotely – from your RV or home– you’ll need a reliable internet solution.
Here are some excellent resources to help you get online, for an affordable price.
These articles from our friends at Technomadia, who run the Mobile Internet Resource Center, provide a wealth of information and options.
If you are looking for a high speed data plan that you can use in your RV while traveling (or even at home), there are several providers to choose from.
The options and plans change constantly, our friends at Technomadia who run the Mobile Internet Resource Center, wrote this great article on this subject, which they update regularly:
Top Cellular Data Plans – Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint
There has never been a time more than now when we need to be able to stream video, watch Netflix and get our entertainment fix! And it’s all possible in your RV BUT all this sucks up a lot of bandwidth.
Here is a great article from our friends at Technomadia and RV Mobile Internet, to help you determine your needs and get started.
Video Streaming Over Cellular and Wi-Fi – TV, Movies and Entertainment on the Go
If you are looking to get TRUE Unlimited Data Plan (yes, a REAL unlimited data plan like the ones you used to be able to get) you can still get them from certain sources.
You can rent a monthly Unlimited Cellular Data line (AT&T or Verizon) for as long as you need it, and set it up throughMobile Must Have. They specialize in providing mobile solutions to RVers and anyone living a mobile life: https://rvlove.com/MobileMustHave
We have two unlimited cellular data plans (Verizon and AT&T) and we use both of the SIM cards in a mobile router, to provide better internet stability in our RV.
We got our dual SIM router from Mobile Must Have and they helped us set it up via a Zoom call. This provides us with a more stable and reliable connection, more like a home internet connection than Wi-Fi.
There are several router options available which you can view here at the Mobile Must Have online store. They can help you determine the best router for your needs.
(We have the Transit Duo, which is the same kind they use in emergency vehicles.)

This is very helpful!! Thank you <3
You are most welcome!
Thanks so much for putting this resource list together! I had been searching for information about national forests earlier today and couldn’t find any mention of closures on their website. The page linked on your list above appears to be messages for employees.
Thanks Dana, will keep digging to find a better link to replace that with. The RV Resource Roundup will continue to be updated as we get updates and keep enhancing it, so we appreciate your feedback!
Unfortunately the link about the forest service is not about whether they are open. It’s about what their employees can expect and their rights.
Thank you – I will keep digging for another page with better info for us RVers
Thank you! This is extremely helpful.
You are most welcome.
