Three Powerful Ways to Plan Your Next RV Trip

1. Custom Create a Trip from Scratch

If you’re the kind of person who loves having full control over every aspect of your trips, AdventureGenie’s Trip Planner empowers you to create a custom itinerary from scratch. Here’s one way you can do it:

  • Start with Your Destinations: Enter your starting point, destination, and any specific stops you want to include. Specify the average miles you want to drive each day, and check if you want to avoid tolls, highways, tunnels, or ferries. Then let AdventureGenie map out the best route for your journey.
  • Add Campgrounds, POIs, and Activities: Choose from the list of suggested campgrounds based on your preferences, such as pull-through sites, full hookups, and pet-friendly. GenieMatch will place your best-matched campground at the top, but you can browse all options and then add your pick to your trip. You can also add Points of Interest (POIs) along the way – eg. a fuel stops, national parks, zoos, museums, etc. And you can use GenieWishes or ask the Personal Genie to add activities tailored to your interests, whether it’s hiking, trying local cuisine, or exploring historical sites. Here’s an Example: 

Let’s take a look at this map above from a custom trip we created from Grand Junction, CO to Glacier National Park, MT. (You can scroll through all the images in the image carousel to see some screenshots from our trip planning process.) 

Using the Trip Planner, we entered our desired start and end destination, then AdventureGenie suggested a route with stops that aligned with our preferred daily mileage. You can see at the top of the first image it also shows approximate miles and estimated drive time. Click the campground icon at each stop along the way for a list of recommended campgrounds (the highest scored GenieMatch is at the top). You are able to view all campground choices, then add the ones you want to your trip. We typed in that we like hiking, driving scenic roads, visiting farm to table restaurants and local farmers’ markets. So AdventureGenie made suggestions and automatically added them to the notes section for each stop. 

The result? A perfectly tailored itinerary that hits all the high points!

2. Let GenieJourney Plan Your Itinerary

Here’s another option. Let’s say you have a travel vision but aren’t sure how to turn it into a detailed plan, then your go-to feature is GenieJourney. Simply describe your desired trip, and let AdventureGenie’s AI work its magic to create a custom itinerary. 

  • Describe Your Trip: Input a brief description of the trip you have in mind. For example you might type: “I want to explore the best wine regions in California over two weeks, starting in San Francisco and ending in Napa.”
  • Review and Tweak: AdventureGenie will generate a complete itinerary with routes, campgrounds, and activities. You can then review and tweak the details to suit your exact needs.

Here’s an Example:

We were curious to see how well GenieJourney could craft a trip, so we asked it to plan this adventure to suit our needs: “I want to explore the best wine regions in California over two weeks, starting in San Francisco and ending in Napa Valley. I want to visit dog-friendly wineries and hiking trails.”

AdventureGenie’s AI generated a great itinerary with 5 stops, campgrounds, dog-friendly wineries, plus hiking trails, open spaces, and preserves that we hadn’t even considered, where we could hike with our pup Sunny. Take a peek at the screenshots above to see how Adventure Genie presents the options. If you like a faster travel pace, you could easily add more wineries and regions to this itinerary.

You can view the recommended campground options, and see the GenieMatch score for each. But we don’t always go for the top match, as we often prefer to select campgrounds within our Thousand Trails camping network. We like to mix and match campground styles – both for variety, and to stay within our budget. We were amazed at how quickly this itinerary came together, and it saves SO much time having dog-friendly wineries and trails recommended for us! It cut down on our research time substantially. 

3. Start with a Curated GenieTrip and Make It Your Own

If you’re the kind of traveler who prefers to start with a proven popular plan, GenieTrips offers a variety of pre-curated itineraries. These are carefully crafted RV road trips that include detailed guides and recommended activities. You can use them as they are, or customize them to fit your preferences.

  • Select a GenieTrip: Browse through popular GenieTrips (organized by trending, national parks, regional, themed, etc) like the “Mighty 5 Tour of Utah’s National Parks” or “Florida’s Gorgeous Gulf Coast.” Each trip comes with a ready-to-go itinerary, including suggested days, recommended campgrounds, activities at each stop, plus some handy links to learn more.

Here’s An Example:

Let’s take a look at this GenieTrip we selected to avoid spending hours trying to piece together an itinerary. We selected “Florida’s Gorgeous Gulf Coast” trip, which provided a detailed route with five suggested locations to explore. This offered plenty of recommended things to do, see, and explore in each area.

We clicked “Take This Trip” (you can add your own start and end location), then tweaked the itinerary to automatically add some great trails to ride our e-bikes, and include dog-friendly farm-to-table eateries to the Notes section for each stop.

We selected a few past fave campgrounds to stay at – including Camp Margaritaville Auburndale, a KOA near St Petersburg, plus a few Florida Thousand Trails parks in our camping membership network. Being able to select a popular ready-made trip, then easily tweak it to our own preferences was a breeze. We loved discovering so many new places that would have taken us hours to research ourselves! And we likely would have missed out on some of these suggestions.

Overall, we were impressed with these GenieTrip recommendations, and plan to refer to these curated trips for travel inspiration. We are excited about how we can use these for discovering hidden gems and time-efficient, stress-free trip planning.

The Secret Sauce to Personalizing Your Trips: GenieWishes and Personal Genie

  3. We use RV Life Pro for our trip planning and Garmin RV GPS 795 once we hit the road. Both take our RV specs into account and keep us off roads we have no business traveling. Does Adventure Genie use our RV specs to make sure we don’t go on roads with low bridges or have weight restrictions? The option to import data into Garmin with a trip route sounds like a great feature.

    • Hi there, I double checked with the team at Adventure Genie to confirm this before replying… and here is what they said:
      1) We absolutely capture their RV specs in a user’s Profile Settings
      2) AG’s routing software is configured for 18-wheelers, so it routes safely for the largest RVs
      3) AG has the ability to export routes to Garmin – in very technical speak, AG supplies Garmin with routing coordinates, so be advised that Garmin may choose an alternate route than what AG may display in the Trip Planner. The Garmin, if set up properly, should be used as the primary routing software more precisely configured to their RV when on the road.”

      We also use and love RV LIFE Pro, and have just start using it to export our RV Trip Wizard trip into AdventureGenie, so we can add more exciting things to our itinerary along the way that are personalized to our preferences. They are two different platforms, but both have a lot of value and we now use both for our entire trip planning process. Hope this helps! – J

  5. Thank you for the detailed article on AdventureGenie. Just curious whether it can be used with Android or do you have to use trip planning on a laptop? Also if the itinerary give you a couple of choices and can you change certain roads along the way?
