Fifth wheel trailers offer a lot of living space per linear foot, and are especially popular with people who do extended RV travel or full time. In this post and accompanying video, we walk through seven fifth wheel trailers from 7 different manufacturers.
Units ranging in price from $30,000 to over $150,000, catering many different needs. Check out the video for a visual walkthrough, and read on for more information on each RV. You’ll find we’ve covered fivers from Winnebago, Forest River, Grand Design, Keystone, VanLeigh, DRV and New Horizons.
Winnebago Micro Minnie
This Winnebago Micro Minnie 2405RG fifth wheel is a brand new release at the show that is breaking into new territory and was a top pick by RV Business Magazine. Winnebago’s Micro Minnie is much smaller and lighter than most fifth wheel trailers, which allows it to be towed by a much smaller truck. This trailer is only 7 feet wide instead of the typical 8.5 feet width, and can be towed by a half ton truck, perhaps even some mid-sized trucks.
Often, the towing vehicle is often the most expensive part of buying a towable RV. The smaller size and weight of this fifth wheel means many people will be able to tow this with their daily driver truck. Inside, you can feel the smaller dimensions, but it is a very livable floor plan. It is evident this is built to be lightweight, and therefore likely won’t hold up well to heavy use, but it is a good entry into fifth wheel trailers for vacationing RVers. MSRP is around $38,000, Show Price was $29,995. Click here to watch our video tour.
Forest River Vengence
The Forest River Vengeance Touring Edition Toy Hauler fifth wheel won some big awards this year, greatly due to the release of a very innovative suspension system. This new suspension allows the ability to lower the rear suspension as much as ten inches which significantly improves the approach and departure angles for loading and unloading your toys. Especially important if you have a low ground clearance toy. This unit would appeal to families and vacationing RVers. MSRP on this unit was $114,968, Show Price was $74,999. New Vanleigh Pine Crest
Vanleigh is a fifth wheel builder that is a subsidiary of parent company Tiffin Motorhomes. Their first release was the Vilano a few years ago and have further established their brand with the Beacon. Now, they are expanding their product line with a new entry-level fiver, the Vanleigh PineCrest fifth wheel.
Similar to how the Tiffin Open Road gas Class A is an entry point into Tiffin’s popular diesel motorhomes, the goal is to create long term customers who ‘graduate’ to higher and higher end products in the brand’s offering. The PineCrest offers many nice features at this price point offered and we believe it will be a popular choice. MSPR $62,818 and Show Price was $49,977. Click here to watch our video tour.
DRV Mobile Suites Santa Fe
DRV Mobile Suites is a manufacturer of semi-custom fifth wheels that has a solid reputation for building a quality product. We walked through the Santa Fe 44 model. It is a very large fifth wheel at just over 44′ long with a gross vehicle weight rating of 24,000 lbs. The quality is evident and would be a good fit for full-time living. Be sure that you have a capable truck and are able to tow and maneuver something as large as this. MSRP on the Santa Fe 44′ is around $185,000. Click here to watch our video tour.
The Keystone Montana 3741FK front kitchen floor plan was released a couple years ago. But we still feel this is a very innovative and appealing RV. The windshield in the front kitchen area lets in lots of light, when entering the trailer you walk into a living room with three couches. There are steps up to the front kitchen and rear bedroom, which creates a feeling of three separate living zones.
The elevated floors of the front kitchen and bedroom allow for more accessible cabinets inside, and substantially increased storage outside, with a pullout joey bed in the rear.
Keystone Montanas are a very popular choice of fifth-wheel, with over 100,000 units sold. The MSRP on this unit is around $92,200, we didn’t see a show price. Click here to see our video tour.
Grand Design Momentum
Grand Design is currently an extremely popular brand. This Grand Design Momentum 376TH Toy Hauler has a unique floor plan that allows for the full length of the RV to be used as living space, while still allowing space to bring along a large toy in a garage area. This is achieved by an elevated rear bedroom layout above the rear garage that also has a bed that can lift up allowing for taller items in the garage when needed.
There is a very similar version of this fifth wheel in the Grand Design Solitude line called the 374TH. This RV has multiplex wiring and the OneControl centralized panel to access and control lighting, awning, generator, climate control, leveling systems etc – also accessible via an app on your smartphone. Base MSRP on this unit was almost $90K but with all the options, came up to $116,480. Click here to see our video tour.
New Horizons Summit
New Horizons RV is a family owned business that manufactures two lines of fifth wheel trailers and sells directly to consumers. We were glad to finally get a chance to see on in person, as you’ll rarely find one on a dealer’s lot (and even then, it would be a used unit). Their fully custom Majestic is available in custom lengths, and their semi-custom Summit is available in 12 different floor plans.
This RV is built with the full-time traveler in mind, using residential furniture and appliances, and offering a very high-quality fit and finish. As you would expect, being semi-custom, New Horizons has a much higher price tag than most other fifth wheels. But when you see it for yourself, the resulting quality is evident. MSRP $166,564 and the Show Price was $155,564. Click here for our video tour
We hope you enjoyed this quick trip through these seven fifth-wheels. There are of course hundreds of other models that might fit your needs. But we felt these were some noteworthy models for different reasons.
