Mount Hood Village RV Resort, OR (Encore/TC) Review

Mount Hood Village RV Resort is a really nice RV park. It’s an Encore RV park that is part of the Trails Collection recently launched by Thousand Trails. This resort has many cabins and quality amenities. But also has hundreds of more typical campground sites for RVs with fire rings, picnic tables, and trees. Location of Mount Hood Village RV Resort

As the name infers, Mt Hood Village RV Resort is near the beautiful 11,200 foot elevation mountain. This is the tallest point in Oregon, and the Mt Hood National Forest. The mountain seems even taller when staying in the area of this campground at only 1,300 ft elevation. It is about an hour east of Portland, just off of Highway 26 (via Camino Rio Road). While the drive in from Portland is relatively flat, the route from the east where we came from in Madras, Oregon was pretty hilly with some steep grades. Highway 26 is a very good quality road with frequent passing lanes to allow traffic to pass slower moving vehicles.

The closest town is Welches, Oregon. It is a very small town with a few places for tourists to stay, and basic needs. Being right by the national forest, there is a wonderful wilderness area for hiking that borders the campground. We rode our bikes on the trails and thoroughly enjoyed being so conveniently situated by such beautiful and well-maintained biking and hiking trails. Our stay was short at just 3 days. Next time we’d like to stay longer.

Area Attractions

The main attraction is the Mount Hood National Forest, but the campground also borders the Wildwood recreation site, and Salmon River trails. We hear that some folks like to come here in the winter for skiing and other winter sports. We imagine most folks come to this area for outdoor activities or to otherwise get away from the hustle and bustle of the city as it’s fairly close to Portland.  

Amenities at Mount Hood Village RV Resort

This is a large campground, loaded with amenities. It’s very close to beautiful hiking trails and is located alongside the Salmon River. They have a full-service cafe and bakery on site which we didn’t get to try but heard from others that it’s very good. They have a lodge with meeting rooms, and game tables like pool, foosball, and ping pong. There is a well-stocked store with RV supplies and groceries. A propane filling area and firewood for sale, but there was a fire ban in effect during our stay.

There are six restrooms and two laundry rooms. The laundry room had a feature we had never seen before in that you could use your credit card from a remote terminal to activate the machines you were using. The recreation center and pool area were very nice. It had a large indoor pool and hot tub, locker rooms with dry sauna, and very nice exercise equipment in the fitness center. There was a great playground for kids outside the rec center as well.

Mail / Packages

As with most of the Thousand Trails / Encore campgrounds in the Pacific Northwest, they do not accept mail or packages for guests. If you want something shipped, you would need to ship it to General Delivery at the local USPS, or a UPS store. Being such a small town, it is probably best to get your shipments taken care of before or after your stay here.

RV Sites at Mount Hood Village RV Resort

Many of the roads within the campground are paved, but some are gravel. All roads were very well maintained. Nearly all RV sites are gravel or other natural surface. There are about 80 cottages, many of which we believe are owned privately, and not available to the public. Mount Hood Village RV Resort has about a dozen cabins, a few yurts, and five really cute and fairly new tiny homes that are available as rentals. There are also about a dozen tent-only sites.

The RV park had 320 RV sites in four sections at the time of writing this review. And they are currently adding an entirely new section that we expect will add another 80 sites for next season. Two thirds of the current RV sites are full hook up, with the remaining third being water and electric sites. There is a dump station near the area of the campground that has only water and electric sites.

All sites are back in, and most can accommodate larger RVs. We are told this will be especially true of the new section currently under construction. All sites have both 30amp and 50 amp electric. The campground is well spaced out, it doesn’t feel crowded or as though spaces are tight. Most of the sites seemed relatively level but we needed quite a few leveling blocks at our site to get our RV level. We did see other RVs using blocks as well.

PROS

  • Excellent campground amenities
  • Scenic surroundings, with beautiful hiking trails adjoining the park
  • Very quiet and peaceful area
  • On-site cafe and store with good supplies

CONS

  • Our particular site backed up to the main road through the campground and there was a speed bump so we heard lots of squeaking and creaking of trailer suspensions. We love speed bumps for keeping people’s speeds down, so are glad it was there, but this was the only minor thing I could think of as a con for our short stay.

Rates at Mount Hood Village RV Resort

They do offer some RV sites available to the public (non TT members) and the rates for those sites are $64-$70/day. They offer some monthly rates in the $600’s. As we are Thousand Trails members with the additional Trails Collection add-on, this campground will be free for us to stay at in the future.

The campground is open year-round and they do allow you to leave your RV in the campground throughout the winter season for skiing from November to May at $400-$500 per month plus electricity, but you can only stay in your RV for 8 days per month at this rate.

They have a dump station that is open to those who are not staying at the campground. Fee for the dump station is $20 for non-members, and free for members.

Summary

We found this to be an excellent campground, one that is very well maintained, loaded with amenities and in a very nice, scenic location close to nature. They are already a fairly large campground, but will be even larger in the 2018 season once the expansion is complete. Easy to get to, being right off Highway 26, but once you’re there, you’ll feel like you are truly away from it all.

About our stay

We visited Mt Hood RV Resort for 3 nights in late August 2017. The weather was beautiful at this time of year. The campground was mostly full, but they still had spaces available. We had family come to visit us at the park on their way back home from the solar eclipse in Madras, and really enjoyed our brief stay. We will very likely return to this campground in the future, especially since we are able to stay with no nightly fee because of our Thousand Trails membership with Trails Collection upgrade, which you can read about here.     Mt. Hood Village is the first TT RV resort that we stayed in about 8 yrs ago in our 13″9″ Fun Finder as weekend warriors. Since then, we’ve both retired & have been full timing in our Tiffin motorhome for about year & half. We’ve enjoyed reading your posts & watching the You Tube videos as you share your experiences, many of which we can relate to & some that we’ll hopefully be able to avoid thanks to your guidance. I also worked full time for a year our first year on the road while Jackie was retired so I can also relate to the pressures that go along with keeping your boss & clients happy & yet still trying to enjoy the RV life.

    I recently retired in June, 2017 & was raring to go & fully enjoy our next year when I was hit with a couple of unexpected health issues that have delayed our departure. We’ve been parked in our Daughter & Son-in-Law’s driveway since mid-May & hopefully tomorrow I’ll get the thumbs up from the Doctor so that we can get this show on the road.

    We’ll be heading east from McMinnville OR in a couple of weeks through OR, ID, UT, WY, NE, MO, AR, TN, MS, AL, GA & will winter in FL & south TX. We also plan to attend the FMCA rally in Perry GA Mar 15-18th next year.

    Thanks again & hopefully we’ll see you on the road some day.

  2. Hey guys…Thanks for the excellent and through review! This will be a great addition to the TT line up with the new TC upgrade! We are so anxious to use the upgrade. It is like getting sprinkles on an already awesome dish of ice cream. I hope you guys are having a better Fall than you did a Spring with the mechanical issues….LOL! At least the cruise ship didn’t sink out from under you like Rocky was trying to do.
